HALL OF FAMERS DUVALL AND WRIGHT TEAM UP FOR UDTRA WIN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
LAWNDALE, NC - When National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductees Mike
Duvall and Barry Wright teamed up on Tuesday, little did they know they
would produce a magical moment on Saturday night during the 50-lap main
event for the United Dirt Track Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series at
Thunder Valley Speedway.
Duvall of Gaffney, SC drove Wright's J&J Steel Barry Wright/Clements Grand
Prix to the $10,000 win, the fourth of Duvall's UDTRA career and his first
UDTRA win in 11 years. Duvall passed early race leader Randle Chupp of
Mooresville, NC on lap 16, and then pulled away and never looked back.
"Barry called me on Tuesday and asked me to drive his car here," Duvall
said. "I knew my car wouldn't be ready to go, and this track is close to
home, so I decided I'd give it a try. Barry and the crew had this car
working so well tonight, I think anyone could have won with it."
For Wright, having Duvall in the car was like old times.
"Mike and I teamed up many years ago, and had a lot of success," Wright
said. "Back then we had number 5 on the car, and that is the number that's
on it tonight."
A complete comeback for Duvall was completed with Saturday night's win.
Late last year, Duvall was seriously injured in a racing accident in his
hometown of Gaffney, SC. Doctors told Duvall he would never race again.
The doctors must have greatly underestimated the Spiritual Faith and
competitive drive of their patient.
Duvall won by a half straightaway over Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville,
in the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford Rocket/Eatmon Taurus. Four-time UDTRA
Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN brought his Miller Brothers
Warrior/Custom Taurus home in the third spot.
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI charged from the 11th starting spot to finish
fourth in the Jimmy Mars Racing Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo, and moved
into the third spot in the point standings just 15 points out of first
place. It was Mars' fifth straight top five finish in UDTRA competition.
Chupp led the first 15 laps of the race in the Biscotti's Restaurant and
Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime Grand Prix, but faded to fifth at the finish.
Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI was sixth in the Pro Power Racing Engines
GRT/Pro Power Monte Carlo.
Duayne Hommel of Newport, TN finished in the seventh spot after starting
16th in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Pro Power Monte Carlo. The 1996
UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN drove his Christenberry
Trucking and Farms Warrior/Custom Monte Carlo to an eighth-place finish.
UDTRA point leader and 1999 Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA was
ninth-place finisher in the Larry Shaw Race Cars Rocket/Custom Grand Prix,
and second in points, defending UDTRA Champion Rick Eckert of York, PA
rounded out the top ten in the Raye Vest Rocket/Cornett Taurus.
McDowell now leads Eckert in the points chase by 13 points, while Mars
now just two points behind Eckert. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY fell back
to the fourth spot in points after an 11th-place finish in the
Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid. Francis is 12 points behind
Mars with just 27 points separating the top four drivers.
Chupp took the lead from polesitter Pearson at the drop of the green flag
coming off the second turn. Bloomquist followed in third, while Duvall
fourth and Schlieper in fifth. By lap three, Bloomquist had Duvall to his
inside to battle for the third spot.
Two crafty veterans showed their muscle early in the race, as Smith showed
some early strength by passing Schlieper for fifth on lap eight, and on
nine Duvall passed Bloomquist for the third spot. Duvall then chased down
Pearson, and passed him for the second spot on lap 12. The next three laps
saw Duvall chase down Chupp, and then make the pass for the lead on lap
At the halfway point, it was Duvall leading Pearson, Chupp, Bloomquist,
Smith, Schlieper, Mars, Hommel, Randy Korte of Highland, IL in the
Mid-Continental Fuels Rocket/Pro Power Monte Carlo and Francis. On laps
and 27 Pearson and Chupp traded the second spot back and forth, while Duvall
The only caution flag of the race came out on lap 28 when the Seubert Calf
Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Grand Prix driven by Brian Birkhofer of
Muscatine, IA when up in a big fireball in turn three. The fire blew itself
out and Birkhofer was not hurt, but his car was done for the night.
Duvall led Chupp and Pearson down for the restart, and the second place
battle continued with Pearson diving for the bottom groove. Pearson took
the second spot back over on lap 29 with an inside move on Chupp coming
the second turn. On lap 30, Schlieper dove to the inside of Smith in turn
one to move up to the fifth spot.
The last 20 laps of the race saw several drivers improve their positions.
Mars passed Smith for the sixth spot on lap 31, and Bloomquist took over
third spot from Chupp on lap 35. Mars dropped Chupp back to the fifth spot
with a pass on lap 43. McDowell and Eckert moved up to the top ten in the
closing laps of the race.
Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH was the fast qualifier among the 30 entrants
with a lap around the 1/2-mile clay oval in 17.517 seconds for an average
speed of 102.757 miles per hour in the QPI Tools Dirt Ripper Rayburn/Fisher
Monte Carlo. Chupp picked up the $50 Scott Performance Wire Bonus Award
with a win in the second 10-lap heat race.
Pearson came from the fifth starting spot to win the first heat race and
earn the pole position for the main event. Duvall won the third heat race.
McDowell went to his back-up car after a disappointing qualifying run, and
came back to win the 10-lap Polaris ATVs Consolation Race.
Doug Sanders of Springwood, NC won the $150 Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger
of the Race Award after starting 24th and finishing 14th in the Allstate
Mechanical TnT/RED Grand Prix. Mark Kraus of Stratford, WI finished 16th
earn the Lucas Oil Rookie of the Race Award.
The next event for the UDTRA Pro DirtCar Series will be in front of the
SPEED Channel cameras at Scenic Raceway in Oneida, TN for a 50-lap
$10,000-to-win television race this Friday night. Check the UDTRA web site
at www.udtra.com for the air times of this event.
