O'NEAL DOMINATES FOR SECOND UDTRA EAST BAY WINTERNATIONALS CROWN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TAMPA, FL - After avoiding disaster on lap two, Don O'Neal of Martinville,
IN recovered, dominated, and then won his second 100-lap United Dirt Track
Racing Association Pro DirtCar Series East Bay Winternationals on Saturday
night in front of a standing-room-only crowd at East Bay Raceway.
Only a mechanical failure while leading the 2001 event has kept O'Neal
winning three straight East Bay Winternational crowns. While winning the
2000 East Bay Winternationals, O'Neal said he and his crew led by Clint
Gantt found their secret formula.
"We found something here two years ago that really made our car strong
this race track," O'Neal said. "Since then, we've run that same set up,
we haven't changed that first shock or spring."
O'Neal took the lead on the second lap in his Petroff Towing Rayburn/Pro
Power Monte Carlo, and lead the rest of the way to earn the $26,000 top
prize. The 1997 UDTRA Champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR was able to
get close and challenge O'Neal on a couple of occasions, but O'Neal pulled
away each time.
"I was better in turns three and four than I was in turns one and two,"
O'Neal said. "When I would catch the traffic wrong, Billy would get close,
but then I just mashed the throttle a little harder and my Pro Power engine
would give me what I needed."
Despite losing his power steering with two laps to go, Moyer hung on for
the second spot in his Petroff Towing Rayburn/Dickens Taurus. Moyer had
three top three finishes during the UDTRA East Bay Winternationals. He
had a win on Wednesday night, and a third-place finish during the Saturday
afternoon show to vault him to fifth in the UDTRA point standings.
The 1999 UDTRA Champion Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA driving the Larry
Shaw Race Cars Rocket/Custom Grand Prix took the third spot and the UDTRA
Pro DirtCar Series point lead. McDowell now has a 29-point lead over
Saturday afternoon's UDTRA East Bay winner Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI.
Davey Johnson of Greensburg, PA started 27th as a Promoter's Choice, but
charged home to a fourth-place finish driving the Reliable Painting
Rocket/Leggett Grand Prix. Johnson earned the $150 Advance Auto Parts Hard
Charger of the Race Award.
Mars recorded his second top five finish of the day to keep pace with
McDowell in the points chase with a fifth-place effort driving the Jimmy
Mars Racing Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. Steve Francis of Ashland,
held down the third spot for the majority of the race in the Valvoline/Mopar
Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid, but faded in the closing laps to finish
Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA charged from the 21st starting spot to
finish seventh in the Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Grand Prix.
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR took the eighth spot in the JFR
Graphics/Monday Motorsports GRT/Gaerte Grand Prix.
Fast qualifier, race polesitter and two-time East Winternationals Champion
Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV brought his Richard Construction/Poske's
Performance Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo home in the ninth spot.
Shaver out-timed the 68-car field with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval
in 14.441 seconds for an average speed of 83.097 miles per hour. Shaver
also won the $100 JE Pistons Bonus Award for winning the first 12-lap heat
race and earned the pole position for the main event.
Tim Dohm of Charleston, WV rounded out the top ten after starting his Dohm
Cycle Rocket/Russell Baker Monte Carlo in the 24th starting position.
O'Neal's night almost ended in turn one on the second lap. As he worked
the corner, his car got sideways and almost came to a stop. O'Neal kept
going, but there were 12 cars behind him scrambling to get out of his way
that did not. Two of those cars did not come back for the complete restart.
Four-time UDTRA Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN and R.J. Conley
of Wheelersburg, OH were out of the race. Also involved in the crash were
defending UDTRA champion Rick Eckert, 1996 UDTRA Champion Freddy Smith,
Van Wormer, Terry English, Shannon Babb, Matt Miller, Chuck Harper, Dan
Schlieper, McDowell, and Dohm.
The restart after a lengthy red flag saw Shaver take the lead followed by
O'Neal and Moyer. On his second try to negotiate turn two on lap two,
O'Neal did much better, as he passed Shaver for the point, and then began
pull away. Before he could get up a head of steam, however, a spin by Van
Wormer of Picconing, MI in turn two brought out the caution flag.
The restart saw O'Neal check out on Shaver, Moyer, Wallace, and McDowell.
Van Wormer spun again in turn one on lap five to bring out the third caution
flag of the race. The rest of the field caught O'Neal again on lap seven,
thanks to a caution flag for Harper of Beverly, WV in turn two.
Two drivers stepped to the outside groove on the restart, and really began
to make some progress. Moyer drove around Shaver for second in turn one,
but it was Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH that put on a show driving the QPI
Tools Dirt Ripper Rayburn/Fisher Monte Carlo. Moran used the cushion to
advance himself from seventh to third by lap 11.
Francis also went to the cushion to take over the fourth spot on lap 12,
then sped after Moran. Francis dove for the bottom of the track in turn
on lap 19 to take over the third spot from Moran. By lap 30, O'Neal held
full straightaway lead over Moyer.
Marshall Green of Dalton, GA stalled his Barto Enterprises Rocket/Hatfield
Monte Carlo in turn four on lap 39 to bring out another caution flag. For
the restart, it was O'Neal, Moyer, Francis, McDowell and Mars.
Eckert was running sixth and Johnson had come from 27th starting spot to
seventh in just 39 laps. Moran faded back to eighth with Shaver and Wallace
rounding out the top ten. On the restart, Eckert and Johnson got together,
and Moran took evasive action to get out of the way.
Moran was forced into the front straightaway wall, and then was hit by Randy
Korte of Highland, IL. Both drivers were O.K., but Moran's car and Korte's
Mid-Continental Fuels Rocket/Pro Power Grand Prix were done for the night.
It took several minutes under a red flag condition for East Bay Raceway
officials to load Moran's car on a rollback.
The next caution flag came out on lap 45 when Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC
his Youngblood Concrete/Easy Care Mastersbilt/Cornett Taurus in turn two,
and then he cut down a left-rear tire two laps later to bring out the eighth
caution flag. On the restart, O'Neal worked the outside cushion, while
Moyer went for the inside groove to keep pace with the leader.
The ninth caution flag was brought out for a light rain shower on lap 51.
UDTRA officials kept the cars rolling on the track to keep as much heat
the track as they could, and after a few minutes, the rain left the area
the green flag came back out.
Van Wormer had his third spin of the race on lap 55 in turn two, and after
being charged with his third caution flag of the race, was forced to park
his Bayline Fire Protection Warrior/Custom Mustang for the evening. O'Neal
led Moyer, Francis, McDowell, and Johnson for the restart.
Francis had jumped to the outside and began to reel in the second place
of Moyer on lap 60. Randle Chupp of Mooresville, NC spun his Biscotti's
Restaurant and Winery/Park Ohio Rocket/Draime Grand Prix down the
backstretch on lap 64 to bring out a caution flag. By lap 67, McDowell
tried the bottom groove and began to close on Francis for the third spot.
There was a three-car battle going on for second spot by lap 70 among Moyer,
Francis and McDowell, but Moyer was able to pull away on lap 75. Moyer
able to close on O'Neal on lap 79, as O'Neal was trying to lap Eckert.
McDowell passed Francis for the third spot on lap 81.
The field was bunched up on lap 82 for a caution flag when John Mason of
Millersburg, OH cut down a right-rear tire. Moyer turned up the wick after
the restart, and began to challenge O'Neal for the lead again on the 86th
lap. O'Neal was up to the challenge and had pulled away by lap 90.
The final caution flag of the race came out on lap 99 when Moyer blew his
power steering and left debris on the backstretch. Despite the problem,
Moyer held on for the second spot in the two-lap dash to the checkered flag.
UDTRA commended the East Bay Raceway officials for the great racing
conditions on a track that had run a history-making two complete shows in
"This race track was in as good a shape for the daytime race as a lot of
good tracks have at night," UDTRA President Mike Swims said. "The first
race got over at 4:30 p.m., and the East Bay Raceway crew completely redid
the race track and had it back to us by 7 p.m. The track was the best it
has been all week for the night show, and they really did an outstanding
Jackie Boggs of Grayson, KY drove his McDonalds Swartz/T&H Monte Carlo to
victory in the fifth heat race to win the $50 Scott Wire Bonus Award.
Moyer, O'Neal, McDowell and Chupp took other heat race wins.

McCullough Motorsports Rocket/Russell Baker Grand Prix, Van Wormer won the
Polaris ATVs second Consolation Race, and Birkhofer won the third
