Weight limit for Modifieds, not Stocks at Ice Bowl;
eligible drivers in either class can make engine claim
TALLADEGA, Ala. (Jan. 13) - Modified drivers will be making the short drive to the scales this weekend, during the annual Ice Bowl at Talladega, Ala., Short Track.
I.M.C.A.-sanctioned tracks have the option to enforce minimum weight limits at special and regular point season races. Talladega Short Track officials have elected to do so for the Modified division, meaning that all cars must weigh a minimum of 2,450 pounds - including the driver - or be disqualified.
Stock Cars also have an optional minimum weight requirement, of 3,100 pounds, but that limit won't be in effect for the Jan. 16-19 Ice Bowl.
Both features will start 24 cars and national, regional and state points will be awarded. Any eligible driver can claim an engine from one of the top four finishing cars in their respective division. Track points will not be in effect so the claim option is not limited to the top 20 drivers in points from last year.
Pit gates open at 9 a.m., with practice sessions starting at 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Qualifying races start at 1 p.m. Saturday and consolation and championship features are set for Sunday, also with a 1 p.m. start.
The I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified main pays $1,500 to win and $100 to start; I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Cars running in the North-South Challenge get $750 to win and $75 to start.
The purse and race format is based on a two-day show, and the purse will be 80 percent of the gate in the event of in-clement weather.
