30 best Stock Car, 15 best Late Model
finishes to be used in national standings
VINTON, Iowa (Jan. 10) - National point standings for both the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Car and Late Model divisions will be based on different numbers of races this season.
Stock Car standings will be determined using drivers' 30 best feature finishes over the course of the year, while the 15 best races will be used for Late Model standings.
Both divisions had used the 20 race, 40-point system (40 points for a feature win, 39 for second, 38 for third, etc.) since the late 1980s. Instead of a maximum possible 800 points, Stock Car drivers can accumulate as many as 1,200 and Late Model drivers as many as 600.
"The different length of time and opportunities drivers in the two classes have to run for points is the reason behind this change," said I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root. "The point season is from January 'til the end of September and typically there are more tracks Stock Cars can race at during the week."
"Contrast that with the Late Models, which have essentially a 16-week season from late April to late August," he added. "On a percentage basis, we have more one night a week racers in the Late Model division than any other. It's im-possible for most of them to even get 20 races in."
The shorter point season for Late Models allows for the scheduling of more Deery Brothers Summer Series events in the spring and fall.
Stock Cars remain I.M.C.A.'s fastest growing division, both in terms of member drivers and sanctioned facilities. Thirty races will also be used in compiling regional standings for the class.
National Late Model standings had been based on drivers' best 20 feature finishes since I.M.C.A. revived the division in 1987.
The same 20 best finishes format was adopted for the Stocks when the sanctioning body started crowning a national championship in that class the next year.
National and regional Modified standings will continue to be based on the 30 best starts. National Sprint Car and Hobby Stock point totals will be determined by the 20 best nights out.
