Jeff Chapko takes over ownership and
promotional reins at Ionia Raceway Park
LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (Feb. 22) - Jeff Chapko has been a very busy man.
The new owner and promoter of Ionia Raceway Park has already seen a full slate of renovation and construction proj-ects completed, in preparation for opening night on April 26.
"We've re-clayed the whole track with about 20,000 yards of clay from the bottom of a man-made lake about six miles away and there are new dirt roads in the pits. Nobody will have to drive on the grass there," Chapko said. "The en-tire facility, the parking area, pits and infield have been re-tiled for drainage. A new parts store and storage barn has been built and all the equipment upgraded."
"Our goals are to make the fans and the racers happy, and to treat everyone equally and fairly," he added. "This race track is paid for and debt-free. I own this facility."
Constructed in 1971, the Lake Odessa track originally opened as the Ionia County Speedway. Friday night programs at what was formerly the New 96 Speedway through Aug. 30 this season and will feature the IM.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds.
"What I like best about the I.M.C.A. Modifieds is the cost," said Chapko. "They're economical and they're competi-tive."
The former motorcycle dealer competed on both two wheels and on four during his own racing career. A regular in the late model class at Crystal Motor Speedway, Chapko also ran a handful of I.M.C.A. events.
Regular race cards will also include the late model, hobby stock, pro stock and 4-cylinder modified classes. Three ALMS events are scheduled at Ionia Raceway Park, along with specials for sprint cars and Legends.
