anybody tried to drive a dirt track car with no power steering? is it possible? i have a manual steering box off of a 70 camaro i was just wondering if it would work, would seem like a lot of weight off of the front end and no thrown belts and no blown pumps.... any thoughts guys?

My brother ran his without power steering for a few races. He said he could feel the track better, but it wore him out trying to fight it all night. I personally wouldnt try it.

they invented power steering for a reason the weight savings isn't all that much compared to being able to work traffic after 10 laps at 90* humid summer nites

i tried this once last year. On the clock, because i was fighting the wheel a lil bit it actually slowed lap times. It does have better feel, but in my opinion its not worht it

Careful not running the power steering.

If either of your wheels take a lick, it could break your arm.

But you will have a few extra ponies.

odb93 is right. several years ago i used to run without power steering. a guy clipped me in the left front wheel and sprung my left hand. it took 6 months for me regain strength in that hand and it still bothers me occasionally even now.

I ran manual steering all last year in my mustang and thought it was great, good track feel, but a little tiring after a main. You get used to it after a few races though. I'm going to run it this year too, but like the other guy said, watch your hands when you get hit, it hurts!!

Years ago I ran the older chevelles that had manual steering. If you quicken the steering it isn't that bad but the fellows that talked about the wheel taking a finger off or busting a wrist are very MUCH correct. The funny part is I ran those chevelles for 8 years and nothing like that happened but my arms sure got pumped up.

you can run with no power steering, and once you get going it steers pretty easily,I used to run like that in a latemodel. But,one night a guy slid in to my lf tire on the start of the race, and it jerked the wheel so hard it snapped a bone in my wrist. No power steering is very unforgiving on your body when you encounter a front collision with the front end.Power steering takes a way most of the jolt, that otherwise your arms and wrist would take.

If you are going to do it without, use the steering box made for power, they have a quicker ratio, just connect the hoses together or connect one hose back to the box.

I must be lucky been runnin without the pump with power box .Been hit in the front but must not have been hit right yet. When I was running a pump the belt came off and I didn't even know it.The manual box will have to many turns end to end so if yuor are going to do with out run a power box.
