when running for an evening at the races with an HEI and good module and super coil should a feller run an alternator or just be sure the battery is charged before race night. I would think the dist. would like more voltage to run on. What do you do? Does the dist care if it's getting 10-12 volts from the trunk battery or does it want more? Would it cause a misfire or high rpm miss?

I have never ran an alternator in six years of racing and my father who has been racing for over forty years has never ran one except on the nascar GN cars. They need alternators, ask lil' E...lol.

An HEI , stock or modified, needs almost 10 volts to operate properly. At 10 volts it should run without a misfire at 8000 rpm. An alternator (front weight) or charging the battery before every race, not race night, works okay for short track racing when not using any other electrical accessories. I don't carry a generator to the track and I don't like front weight. My solution is to run an 18 volt system. It cranks on 12 and runs on 18. There is plenty of insurance voltage in this. SLEEPY

i agree with Sleepy. we read the article that he wrote in Circle track magazine and wired our car up like that last year. It worked good.

one thing to keep in mind read your rules before going to an 18 volt system might not be legal

yeah, they all have that "if it doesn't say you can, you can't" rule. that's the catch all rule that allows a promoter to DQ anyone he doesn't like, lol.

The way I look at it is it all depends on how much dependability you want. If you do run one then thats one thing you don't have to worry about so much.Only battery maintanance we had last year was to open the battery box a couple of times and check for corrosion. We were planning on winning a championship and wanted to minimize potential problems. And it worked I guess, we won the championship and had not even one D.N.F. with only 3 finishes out of the top five. Which ever way you decide to go good luck this season.

I'm using 2 6v golf cart batteries in series and can run about 3 nights racing on a charge .I run dual spal electric fans and msd box. Also no altenator. The batteries are mounted in the rear and movable for ease of adjusting weight at the track. If your going to add weght to the car to get it set up it might as well be something you can use.I run electric fans cause I got tired of fan blades distroying my radiators and belts comming off.
