the ones i ask to sponser what to see the car out on the track and win before they give you money, i guess they think the money to get the car ready falls off trees.....lol

The best are the guys who cry poverty, flip past a dozen $100 dollar bills, give you 1. And than tell you when and how to do everything, and than tell EVERYONE how thier helping you out...

The best give you money and dont want their name on the car for fear others will start beating the door down with the " I saw you sponsored so and so, I figured, I see if I could steal you away from him, het,het"..
Or the guys who say sponser you $500, give you $200, to get started, so you can get all the lettering of course, than they never seem to have the money for the rest.
Gotta love them...
My best sponsor right now is, Manual La'Bore..

Like 17j, no problems here, no sponsers. I saw a decal once "No Sponser, No crew, No problems!" I can add NO WINS either. I'm just having fun anyway. loojack..

Be patient with me i have a lot to say on this. mostly rambling.

I have never looked for a sponsor, ive gotten as much as 9500 cash for a street stock season.

Racing is our hobby. I dont look for money from anyone to help me use my bass boat...

The bottom line is if you are any good they will come to you, trust me, ive had a lot of diff sponsors, including friends who just wanted to help.

I have had many friends hand me cash, from 100-500. I have had several business owners come to the pits after the race and offer to help, everyone is a potential sponsor.

A man once was standing there as we pushed my car on the trailer, and he asked if we wanted a winch, i said sure,he handed me a bus. card and said call me monday. he had a 6000 lb winch waiting for me new in box. he didnt want his name on my car he didnt want to be bothered by other racers..

I had a 2000 dollar check pre written by a siding and roofing company handed to me in the pits. I had to call monday to see if he wanted on the car or what, he said sure, next yr is good come see me in april. then he gave me another 2000.

The thing is if you get a sponsor and they hand you 2500 bucks now your commited to bust your a$$, and your commitment to them should be a business deal, sometimes before food for your family, if your a good business person.

thats a lot to commit to, so if you cant afford to race on your own you shouldnt accept money in large sums pretending you can make it all year, i have never not had a spare motor, heck ive been 3 deep and blew 2 in one day, on a preseason open comp out of town no one even knew i was at. if i didnt have the 3rd motor i would have missed my home tracks opener the next weekend. that would have hurt some sponsor relations im sure.

Many people have talked their way into sponsors, and money from businesses only to find out they couldnt afford to race anyways, and that has burnt a lot of bridges for us dependable racers.

Here is my very best sponsor plan. This is what i like to do, i tell anyone interested in sponsoring me i can use a fuel sponsor, and explain its a pay as you go,when i need a drum of fuel ill come see you, and get the money (250). That way if i wreck, get hurt or have to work out of town whatever, were even.I can park my car anytime!!!

theres no rule saying you cant have everyone buying your fuel, right..

notice i didnt say tires, everyone had heard about the cost of racing tires, no way..

I have taken lump sums, but i do not like to do it that way. I allways gave my trophies to my sponsors till they didnt want them anymore then i started giving them to kids in the stands, they love it.

all of my sponsors have a hood, door or even quarter panel on their walls if they want, i will cut a perfectly good one of if its got their name on it at season end. They love it, especially with tire marks.

I know ive been lucky, but the main thing to realize is that i was gonna race without them anyways, i could afford it.

so the sponsor money was EXTRA.

TRUST ME RACE ON YOUR OWN AND WIN, WIN A LOT AND YOULL GET HELP.

P.S.I recently moved to council bluffs iowa, and am looking for a team to help, running either SCS,BBB,AVOCA. Or anywhere else close. If you want some crew help e mail me and well see if we can get together.

sorry this is so long.

Pitch it to em like this...Can you spend five hundred dollars or so twice a year and have 3-5k+ people at one time hear your business name in any other marketing area? Most will buy if you have any salt at all. Get on the PA guy about running down the sponsor list of at least the top five and get it on tape. Show them what they are getting.(make sure you are in the top five) Like 66jj said "Win and they will come" Always, Always, Always, Always be PROFESSIONAL on and off the track. If you have a daycare or something sponsoring you, dont choke the flagman or the pit steward! Sell Yourself, not racing.

66jj Must be a different story where you lived. A guy I pit next to didn't have anyone coming to him with any offers and he was consistantly in the top 5 with a good looking car. Some people are just lucky, I unfourtunatly are not one of them. Although one night after the races were over I had a guy offer me a FREE beer. Maybe over time we will work up to a six pack. Doesn't hurt to dream, does it?

Hiersraceing, At our level it is totally unrealistic to expect any sponsor to give you the money to buy a race car so you can go play. You have to fund the team first then go look for sponsors and sell them value by appearing with the car off the track at shows parades his business etc.IMHO

You've gotten some good advice to this point. I will add, that you are not really looking for a sponsor - your selling advertisement space on your race car. An attorney told me that there is a legal reason for the distinction. I didn't ask her to elaborate - since I don't speek legalese. It also may save you from having a "sponsor" come to you at the end of the season asking for whatever parts were purchased with his money. I actually had a "sponsor" give me $100 for tires, and at the end of the season wanted the tires. I finally gave him two of the worst ones I had just to make him happy.
