What is the safe set up to mount lap belts? From what I've read the lap belt shoud be mounted at a 45 degree angle to the drivers hips,at the same width as the drivers hips,and the belts should be kept as short as possible. Follwing these guidelines, in our car this would mean mounting the lap belt to the seat frame, this worries me. Our seat frame is 1 1/2 inch tubing welded to the roll cage and is very strong, but I would hate to find out it wasn't strong enough. Any suggestions??? Thanks.

well you are 1/2 bigger on your seat bracket then mine is and 1/4 in bigger them all my hoop bars so you should be alright. if your seat bracket wasn't strong enought in the first place your belts wouldn't work no matter how you mount them. we run a bar out bolth ways from the seat bracket to the outside of the seat and weld a tab on the ends of them to mount the belts too then we mount the shoulder straps to the cross bar in the main roll bar below shoulder level so it pulls you downwards into the seat

Your seat and belts should be mounted to the cage somehow and yes your seat can break loose and the belts will hold you in I use kicker bars off the cage and position my bracing so I can mount my belts on them this includes the crotch strap don't be foolish and shortcut on it's mount if you never want to need them but this is one area that overkill is not a bad thing

Whenever your common sense is telling you not to mount a seatbelt tab to a part of the seat-loop, you really might want to listen. I've seen (and raced in) cars with the seat or the belts mounted to the floorpan. VERY BAD IDEA! Mount the belts to the main cage so that in the worst possible scenario, you will be held inside the rollcage! We've all seen horriffic crashes where the driver survived-virtualy unscathed that usually is the result of executing a safety plan using good equipment and good common sense. JMO

You could also build another bracket that goes from doorbar to doorbar that is just for the belts. Your angles sound right, I bet steve smith auto sports has a book that would help you out too. good question and good luck.

Thanks for all the help. We ended up running a 1 1/2 bar from doorbar to doorbar, just behind the seatframe. Then took 1/4 inch plate 2 1/2" X 6", (1 for each side of the seat)sawed a 1 1/2 hole in one end, slid it over the new bar, got the right angle then welded it solid, drilled a 1/2 hole for the lap belt to mount. Ended up with the lap belt at about 45 degree angle to the drivers hips andthe same width as the drivers hips. Probly added some weight, but feel much better about driver saftey now!! Thanks again.

i have one problem with mounting a bar from door bar to door bar. if it is part of the seat frame it is a little better but i still don't like it this is why. how many guys have taken a shot in the door that bends the door bars, when that bars moves so does your lap belts but your shoulder straps don't. i'ts going to do one of two things when this bar bends it's either going to bow and make the belt loose or shift and try to pull your hips away from your torsoe. if you are going to run a bar from one side of the car to another run it in the main hoop and as low as possible. you rarely ever see the main hoop give like you see door bars do thats what they are designed to do is absorb energy. we have been building our seat frames out of 1 in tubing and hooking the belts to the seat frame for over 10 years about 80 cars total and and rolled and piled more than 1/2 of them up and never has anybody hurt or any trouble with the seat brackets

We have now welded the new cross bar into the seat frame. If the door bars move the seat will move with them. Thanks again!!
