Ok I am going to start racing next year. I am in the market for a fire resistant racing suit. I have looked at a few local shops and on-line. My question is what is the average rating of the suits that most drivers are using? I would think that I could get out of the car in 60 sec if I had too. But if I buy a suit that will protect me for 60 sec I will have to pay more for it that I will have in my car!!!

Any suggestions?

BTW the track where I race only say that I have to have an approved racing suit. So I can wear anything.

the best deal i've come across is at speedway. they have a 1 piece 2layer suit for $200. it's made by safety racing. it's SFI 5 rated. i think that means it's good for 5 seconds. i have one and i like it. i've never heard of a 60 second suit. some nomex underwear will help, but it will be hot in the summer.

before you ever hit the track, practice getting out of the car fast. chances are you'll never need to make a quick exit, but it's better to be prepared.

You should try searching on eBay for "nomex racing suit". I got a barely used one-piece Nomex 3-layer suit for $161.00 including shipping. There are all kinds of new and used one & two piece suits to be found and usually a much better deal than buying off the shelf. And ditto on the underwear. It's certainly hot wearing all that nomex, but much better than the burn unit.

if you can wait another month try getting a suit from racers wholesale I got mine for around 150-175 and it is a 1 piece 3 layer. It is kind of warm but I feel safe. This was the best deal. Bobby

they usually have them during Dec. or so. I would do a google search and see what comes up my wife and my mom is the ones that got it for me.

SFI 5 doesn't mean its good for 5 seconds, but that is about how long that suit will last before flames making 'direct' contact will burn through. SIMPSON website has a decent explination of the SFI ratings. Or do a search on the web. I can't remember what the darn SFI ratings mean, but some quick research would probably show you. I do know this, all the cheaper suits are treated with a chemical that makes them fire resistive to a point. Repeated washings will take that out so I would stay away from those suits they are cotten and after a while thats all you have is cotten.
Nomex is the way to go, that is what the firefighters that would be pulling us out wear.
Gloves should be nomex with the calf skin sewn on to the nomex not sewn to a seam so that the calf skin is all you have at on your palm. shoes and underwear are a good idea too!
I have one word for all of you SIMPSON, yea you pay more for a 2 layer nomex suit, but... what is your LIFE worth. why do I say it all this way, I have been a firefighter for 21 years. I have seen people burned and know firsthand how your quality of life sinks while recouping from burns

the suit is not the only thing to think about. remember that the helmet liner and your neck brace should also be fire proof. not flame resistant. nomex or ppi is the way to go. your bodys is nothing without your head.

like i said on another topic, i'm not spending another dime on a simpson product. simpson race products duped bill simpson himself. bill is back with a new company called impact racing. that's where i'll spend my dough.

nothing is fire proof, everything on or in a race car will burn if enough heat is put to it, firesuits will not last more than about 15-20 seconds, max in a fire.
As for Bill Simpson, he sold his company after the death of Dale Earnhardt. How does ones own company dupe the owner?

simpson products wouldn't stand behind bill simpson in his lawsuit against NASCAR. NASCAR blamed dale earnhardt's death on a faulty seat belt. testing showed that the seat belt was installed improperly. all bill wanted was an apology from NASCAR and they won't admit they were wrong, because they were afraid that if they did, bill would sue them for damages. bill said he would've accepted the apology and moved on. i think bill should've moved on anyway, but he didn't. i think NASCAR was wrong for not issuing an apology and bill is wrong for dragging it into court. even if bill is wrong, his company should've backed him. he's done more for racing safety than anyone and i'm buying my stuff from him even if he made some bad decisions.

Does Bill's new company have a web site? I heard they were only selling helmets in October.

it's impactraceproducts.com but it's still under construction. bill had to sign a one year "covenant not to compete" with simpson race products. i believe one year has passed since then. he's got some new shoes and gloves just out and he will be coming out with new belts with better webbing and other stuff too. i dig his new "kid" helmets.

stay tuned, i think impact will be the new leader in safety equipment and it looks like his new line of safety equipment is going to cost a lot less than what simpson race products charge.

do what i did. when i started racing i needed a suit so i talked to a local big late model racer and he was getting a new one(the old one only had like 6 races on it) for his new sponsers. So he sold me his triple layer nomex suit for 50 bucks.

I found a three layer nomex suit that is RJC brand. Has anyone had any dealings or opinions on this company?

Now, I know they are not the best, but R.J.S. makes a 2-peice nomex suit for approximently $180. I have to use the 2-peice to get the fit that I need. Also I think G-Force makes them.
In another post they said go to the simpsons site and it will explain the layers and things. The website is www.simpsonraceproducts.com.

After looking for a pair of decent all black pants, I ended up customizing a pair of G-Force pants. They were the 2 layer pants, like $130 I think. They have a white stripe made of reflective material. The material is sewed onto, not into the pants, like many others. This allowed me to take a thread puller and take the stripe off. I didnt hurt the integrity of the pants at all!! I now have an all black pair of pants. They stay neater looking than a pair with dirty white stripe. Now this wont keep you cleaner just cleaner looking!!!

Like was said earlier buy a pair of nomex pants and jacket/suit. Its worth the investment. Talk to some old time racers and they tell ya some horror stories of racing in overalls, and work cloths!!

Here is a scary story, I started racing in a T-shirt and jeans, with an open face helmet from K-Mart ($25)
I just found out that I will be replacing all of my safety stuff next year as the track has adopted new SNELL ratings and nothing more than 2 years old for belts and suits. probably a good thing

UFO, I remember when everyone raced like that, some without even helments. Everyone wore old t-shirts, overalls, and pants. I had never seen a firesuit up until about 3 years ago, I am not that old. LOL
So no that didn't sound stupid bc I know where you are coming from.

hoo baby,
Wow, thats not that long ago, we left the jeans and t shirts behind about 12 years ago. But getting back to the origanal post, I am glad that safety has become more of an issue. If I can get a copy of the photo, I will send you a pic of a burned woman, from a car wreck, but burned just the same.
