A buddy and I are interested in putting together a bomber class car to get into dirt track racing. We realize that we have a lot to learn, but before we dive in, we want to get an idea of how cheaply it can be done. Assuming we start with a car that is in good running condition, what can we expect additional upfront costs to run, as well as upkeep and maintenence costs?

Well it aint I spent $8000 on my motor this winter but I buy all the top stuff.I buy all top stuff from the engine to tires and wheels to the seat. I say spend about $2 or 3 thousand. Sometimes even cheaper but if you wanna compete you have to spend the cash.

your cheapest road would be to find a good used bomber at the track and then go from there a bomber around here will go from 1000 without motor and tranny to 3500 turn key that is used new from sctatch if you want to go fast will run 3500-5000 depending on how much of the work you can do yourself and what access you have to a junk yard myself i run junk yard motors that i rebuild myself and have less than 500 in them when i'm done. i built a new car last year and took all the stuff out of my old one i could personally thats the way to go because if you get a good cage and take care of all your stuff you can use it over and over again and all you have to buy in the future is a new skin car and a rebuild kit for the motor for the next year. i spent about 2000 on this car just for the fact that my old one had alot of machanical failures over the past couple years and i replaces everything that had ever broken on me. this year have finished every race besides when i blew a tire and that is out of your hands most of the time. you can do it cheaper than what i listed but you'll do alot of watching from the pits and take alot of but chew'n from the guys you run into every week because your driving junk and can't keep it in a strait line

I agree with racer17j. Buy one that works good at the track you are going to race. Go to and read "how to build a bomber." Very good reading.

I agree the cheapest way is to go to the track or get on classifieds and buy a car. Just me personally I like to build my own especially if i just done what i did a month ago and thats sell mine. Cause I hate buying someones car and them having wires and other stuff rigged and you gotta go back through all that. Just myself for the money you can buy a car running you can have you a car basically started. I mean down here I get my a car for $50.00 and then it takes me like 3 or 4 days to have it gutted and have a cage in it. But it seems like I can't keep a car the last 2 seasons I've sold my cars and i've only been racing for 3 yrs. Guess when you do so good and buy top stuff and in the points ppl will pay to have a good car. But the cheapest way is to buy a rolling chassis but make sure they aint got the car half A$$ED
