I was just wondering if a rear from an 81 malibu wagon will fit in my 81 old cutlass
are they the same width? is it a simple bolt in?

Yes. All metrics will interchange. The metrics are 78-87 A and G bodies such as malibu, monte carlo, cutlass, grand prix, regal, elcamino, etc. S-10's are the same also. The only differences that You will see are the 78-79 had smaller pinion bearings but the entire assembly changes out fine.

A word of warning -- probably known by most folks but I found out the hard way. There is a difference between the carriers depending on the gear. I had a carrier w/2.41 stock R/P and substituted a 3.23 R/P. I needed a ring spacer to make the change -- first I called Summit, who told me there was no such thing as a 7.5" ring spacer. I found a used parts place on the net (M&R in Wisconsin) who DID have this spacer.

Speedway Motors has the spacer kit for making this conversion also. I believe it costs about 45 or so.
