Well, we finally found an axle to replace the one we broke last week in our 9". It fit perfectly, with a couple of exceptions. We run 5X4.5 in the back, so the hub had to be redrilled (it is a 5X5 axle, just like the old one). That was no problem. The problem was that when we took the wheel bearing off, the new one wouldn't fit, it was too small. This is for a big bearing housing mind you, and a 31 spline axle. I got enough cleaned off of the bearing to get a part number. I called the parts store, and they said this bearing was $81, compared to $15 for the other one. The axle bearing surface has an OD of 1.625"!! I checked some sources, and that isn't even a common aftermarket axle dimension. What the heck is going on here? It is a Ford 9" axle, or at least I am 99% sure it is. Anyone ever seen anything like this? It was at a machine shop already, so I think we are just going to have him turn it down to the correct size. Still...anyone give me any leads as to what is going on here? This is getting really frustrating...

some other companies make axles like the ford 9 inch. with the removable center section. it should have the letters FoMoCo or FORD MOTOR COMPANY stamped on the axle. it might just be a one off year axle that no one knows about. lord who knows what ya got!!!
