Can you change a 28 spline Ford 9" over to a 31 spline? Is all I have to do is change the mini spool and the bearings? It seems that's all there is to it, but maybe I am wrong. Thanks.

Currently the car is setup for a 3/8 mile I think with 6.00 gears. We currently have a 31 spline setup with cut axles, so they kinda have to stay I think. We have another center section with 5.14 gears in it, but it is 28 spline. I really don't feel like swapping gears between them as I think I have a potential buyer for the 6.00 third member as it is. The track we run is 1/2 mile, so those gears are definitely too much. Thanks for the PM...I will probably hit you back later. I appreciate the help.

i wouldn't be getting rid of that 6.0 thats what we run on 1/2 miles in our hobbies turn around 65-6700 depending on your tire size it might just work for you some on here will disagree but 8 out of 10 cars here run that and they are all fast at every track they go to what size tire roll are you running. take a tape and run it around the middle and see what you have

I will do that. I have talked on another message board for tracks in my area, and I was told that 5.43 is the most gear you want to run at that track. I was told this by several people, and they all said 6.00 would make me too slow. I will check again though, but even still, it would be nice to be able to swap this one in if we want to. That is mainly why I was asking. Thanks.

To change a 28 spline over to a 31 spline, you may have to have the hole that the axle goes thru on the carrier opened up. The 31 spline axle is slightly bigger in diameter.

IMO, I'd just put a 31 spline spool in and get rid of the stock carrier.

Well I am trying to avoid having to reshim the ring and pinion. If this is not possible though, I may have to look into other alternatives. I am not sure that full spools are legal at our track, though I am not sure why they wouldn't be. The rules say welded spider gears or mini spool.

it might be because a full spool cost about 4x as much as a mini
