I have a 79 buick regal, running a 9:1 355, three speed tranny on 205-70r15 tires. I would like to put in a 9 inch ford and wondered what gear would be best to keep the rpm around 6000. The track is a slightly banked big half mile. I will run the tranny in 3rd. have to run a 2bbl carb and stock exhaust manifolds. If any one can help me where to start other than asking someone who races there I would appreciate it. Thanks

Dude!
Take a look around the forum, lots of good info already posted. You said you are running a three speed? Lucky you, If you can get a 9 inch rather easily, try around 5.20. I ran a modified in Rapid city and got some good info from a Wissota national champ from 92 there. Rapid city had a half mile track and he told me to run a 5.20, remember it is what the car likes. you have to gear the car to what the engine can take. if you use a cam that comes in around 5000 rpm then you will wind the motor up pretty hard so shoot for a cam that comes in at about 4500. You want tourqe off the corner. if all else fails call the people who manufacture the parts you are looking at buying. they usually can answer all the questions and give (sell) you the parts you will need. hey have fun, friend of mine won a championchip in buick last year.

Are the turns wide if so I would say around a 588 if turns are tight I would say 633 I know from experience in Bombers/Pure Stock what ever you want to call it that on my local 1/2 track with tight turnsI ran a 633 and turned the motor about 6300 and at another track with wider turns with a 588 the motor turned about 6100. With 275 60s on the back and a 215 60 on the left front and a 245 70 on right front
