Do any of you have any ideas on what to use as ballast? Speedway has 50lbs of lead for $40 a piece. I need to add about 150 lbs. and I really don't want to pay that much.($120) What are some of ya'll using, that doesn't cost much.

go to your local tire shop most of them will be glad to give it to you or sell for cheap then you melt it down but take precautions like a respirator for sure or our local scrap metal yard sells it for about .25 cents a pounds

I leave a 5 gallon bucket at the tire shop, like BK said, and ask the guys to toss the wheel weights they remove in there. It accumulates fast, but they may already have a bunch ready to get rid of. I cap off a length of 4 x 4 square tube with plate and fill it up while melting the wheel weights with a torch. Some people use an old valve cover as a mold. Have a pair of needle nose pliers handy to remove the the steel tabs as they float to the top. If you don't use a respirator, definately have a strong fan blowing the fumes away from you in a well ventilated area.

Go to a scrap yard, where they buy& sell iron and metal, and you can buy lead all day long for pretty cheap prices!!

Use an old cracked head. It already has the holes for mounting, this size is about right, it weighs about 75lbs., and its FREE!

I have been using old cutters off of the countys road grader, most of the time they are considered to be junk and there is always a pile of them. They usually weigh anywhere from 75-90lbs. and will bolt to the frame. You can cut them and slide them anywhere on your frame,to get your weight exactly where you want it.

Our local metal recycler sells lead in 15 lbs ingits for about 35$ for 100lbs. I asked him to call me the next time he was making the bricks so that I could bring a valve cover and make a few 50 pounders. Much cheaper.
