just a couple questions. i just bought a 87 monte carlo ss to make into a pure stock for next season this is my first car and got a couple questions. does the dash have to come out? what kind of gears do you think would go good on a a 1/2 mile dirt track. someone has told me to use gears out of a chevy s-10 and others say to run a 5.13 or even a 6.14. what do you usually do with the floor if its kinda rusty but not through. any suggestions for a rookie racer and car builder would be helpful.

as far as what to take out of the intereior get a set of rules and gut everthing you can out of it door panels kicker panels eveything that doesn't need to be there. the gear well waht are you running for engine tranny and tire size thats how you can deturmine what gear you will need more then likely you will find a 3.08 or a 3.23 in any gm rear whell drive after 1977 including astro vans and s-10s. as for your rust holes cut them out and rivet some lite weight tin on there if you can or if it's not all the way thru yet just sand and paint her more than likely your gonna build another in a year so rust holes aren't gonna hurt unless it's right under your feet or in the drive shaft tunnle

I started out by building my first car from the ground up,and from experence I have found that it is best to buy a car that is already set up for your first car.You will have alot less money in it,and by the time you build your second car you will already know what you need,this saves alot of costly trial n' error.

I completely agree that a new racer will get much more benefit from buying a car that has already been built and raced. If it has raced at your track then you know that it's compatible with your rules. It will probably cost less money to buy a used race car than it will to build one. Racing a used car will teach you things about its design and construction that you may want to implement or change when you're ready to build one, thus producing a better product. I know that it's tempting to go to work and beging building your own car, but if you're pretty new, you WILL be better off looking for something race-ready or close to it. Another benefit is that you will have much more free time to work on the car to improve it or make it to your liking if you're not starting from scratch. You could even sell the SS to make up some of the expense, or put it away for later.

I don't like to mess anyone's plans up, but I'm sharing this from experience, and I wish someone would have put this in my head when I got started.

I would buy If I had to do it all over again. I built my Monte from scratch and it is more work than you think. It may cost a more to buy a car but think of all the time you would spend working on it. On the other hand it sure feels good when a car you spent all winter building does well.

I am on the fence about this it depends on your knowledge of racing.I bought my first bomber this year an totally renovated it.It was kind of mest up.So if you buy one watch for seat mounting,roll cage welding,repack front wheel bearings(found a nail in place of cotter key)and over all look of the car structurally.Just a few tips from one newbie to another.I would agree with these guys buy one,race,and then build one. above all have fun and be safe.

Well I have a baised opinion because I'm in the middle building my first from scratch. But I have been helping experienced racers for the past five years, and all those tricks I've learned I have wrote down in my little black book. BUT I TELL YOU ONE THING IT IS A-LOTTTTT OF WORK JUST TRYING TO GET THE CAR STRIPPED. If you build your own car pay attention to detail (ie with a cutting torch). I have assisted in building two race cars from scratch and word to the wise "get it done now" because if your not careful you will be burnt out working on it before the season ever starts.

Building a car is alot of work and you will definately need help from guys who have done it for a while. Most importantly if you do build one dont get in a hurry, thats real expensive.

many late 80's and early 90's s-10 4 bangers came with 3:73's and 4:11's; however they are small ring gears
