Yes sir it is...just ask my girlfriend she thinks I'm nuts...that is how we run our car.
Most of the parts on our car is salvage yard parts. I get my trannys there and every thing but the motor, rearend gear, and the fuel cell. It is possible to be competitive.

Yes it is possible if you have the time to look around and learn what you need when i started we never bought any chassis parts new, finding the springs was tough we ran front coils out of a 3/4 ton dodge van cut down to 12 inches and rears out of wagons and cargo coils when we could get away with it and won races with it, front shocks where off a S-10 gas shocks front and rears were off a impala i think . How ever time is money and the guy who goes and buys the new parts has more time to tinker then you do and he will probally be faster ,so you will have to work harder and longer to keep up. But you will get alot more enjoyment when you out run the money. We built a 81 monte for a buddy this year he went to swap meets and junk yards and bartered with people . he has 2500 dollars invested turn key with out new tires he is a rookie driver and is able to run up front with us and can give us one tough time to pass . and he loves every minute of it . So go for it and have some fun.

Yes it is possible to run salvage parts and be competitive. My advice is to find a salvage that has a good supply of matric parts sitting around and develop a good relationship with them. After going to my salvage a few times, i asked them if they would be interested in putting their name on my car, and now I get all my parts for free. He just tells me go in the yard and find what you need. This year has been a good year for spindles and upper control arms. But like has been said before, other than the motor and fuel cell, pretty much all my stuff comes from salvage. BTW, I run a 78 regal.
